Window Renovations - Single & Double Hung Windows

by Ron Sawlor

Single and double-hung windows are one of the most common window types, and are recognizable to the homeowner as the windows that slide up and down vertically within their frame. In the old days, these windows were sometimes counter-balanced by sash weights- heavy weights on ropes that descended within the wall cavity along the sides of the window frame to assist in opening the windows. Most modern single & double-hung windows no longer depend on such weights, and hold their position by the ‘friction-fit’ of the sash within the window frame, or by some other mechanical means, such as spring mechanisms.

Single & double-hung windows have been around forever, and they remain in common use today because of their simplicity of design and simple, economic construction. Modern advances in materials and insulated glazing technology have made these windows much more energy efficient. However, in comparison to some other modern window types, such as casement windows, single and double-hung windows can be at a slight disadvantage in the air-tightness department. This is due to the physics involved in housing a sliding sash within a frame as opposed to a sash closing against a frame- it is simply easier to get a tighter seal with the latter window type. It should be noted that modern windows are much more efficient than older windows so that this disadvantage can often be minimal and should be researched on the exact windows you consider purchasing.

Some advantages to choosing single and double-hung windows would include their versatility; because this window type is so common, they are often the preferred choice for historical retrofit applications or any replacement project where it is important that the new windows maintain the appearance of the windows being replaced.

Modern advances in the design and construction of the mounting systems of these windows have also provided such innovations as quick-release, tilting sashes which allow for incredibly effortless cleaning of the windows’ exterior glass - an important consideration for upper floor windows, where the only other alternative is a risky climb up a ladder for cleaning! Ask the manufacturer to demonstrate any such available features and assess their performance in person.

Single & double-hung windows also allow for a wide range of design possibilities- their simple design allows for many innovative options. Features such as internal or removable grill bars, (in many different styles) innovative brick-mold (exterior trim) styling, a selection of internal finish materials and an endless list of other possible features can all be incorporated in today’s single & double-hung windows, incorporating new features with original fit and functionality and also the best advantages of modern performance. For these reasons, these windows are often considered for a wide range of window renovation projects.
