Decks Made With Character

by Lisa VandenDool

With most renovation projects, adding  character means one thing - expense!  Decks are a little different.

Decks can be made a little more complex and stylish without adding much to the overall cost, especially for the do-it-yourselfer.

However, added complication will add to the time and ingenuity it takes to prepare and plan a deck system.  Let's look at some of the most common things that can be added to a deck to build character.

NOT JUST SQUARE

The first mistake some make when planning a deck is the shape. Because many of us live in square homes it seems a square deck would also be fitting.  However, as the accompanying photo shows, simply cutting the corners can add significantly to the design appeal.  Even steps can be built to replicate the idea of an octagon.  In addition, you can go one step further and create a curved deck.

The next component of decking, which plays a role when it comes to design, is the manner in which the flooring or planking is laid.  Many decks simply have the decking running one direction.  However, character can be added by running decking in checker board fashion.  This costs no more for material, but might add slightly to the labour component.

All decks, though, are meant to be used.  While you may add as much character as you wish to the structure, the furniture and practicality of the deck will benefit you the most.  Components, such as lighting and furniture, will extend the enjoyment of your deck, as will plants and privacy.  Remember, the days of summer pass quickly, so build a deck that you truly will enjoy.
