Does
deciding on a countertop material leave you in a quandary?
Consider some of the following options before you make
your decision:
Corian Countertops
Corian is usually a blend of natural minerals with
acrylic resin. Its easy maintenance and unlimited
flexibility of design makes it a popular choice in
today's homes. Its non-porous surface and seamless
design aid in its resistance to stain and mildew and
leaves no place for germs to thrive. Surfaces can
be cleaned with soapy water or little abrasive cleaners.
With its repairable surface, any marks or surface
burns are easily eliminated with light sanding.
Corian is available in beautiful colors and designs and matte/satin, semi gloss or high-gloss finish.
Decorative edges are also available.
Granite, Marble, or Limestone Countertops
Concrete countertops are available in a broad range
of designs, providing your room with a stone-like
warmth. These can be custom made to your own specifications
with a choice of more than a dozen colors. Veining
and texture vary and regular use can impact a warm
patina to the surface over time.
Although hairline cracks may occur these are to be
expected and are simply part of the look of concrete
counters.
Some of the advantages of these materials is their
extreme durability and their unique appearance. They
rarely stain or scratch and can be handmade to your
specifications. These materials are easily cleaned
with warm soapy water.
Alternatives
Ceramic tiles are tough and heat resistant. Hand-painted tiles can add a distinctly personal look to your room
or blending a few decorative tiles with colored tiles
can provide alternative possibilities. Ceramic tiles
must be sealed regularly since grout is susceptible
to stains. Other materials worth considering are laminate,
fiberglass, cast iron, enameled steel or wood.
Whatever your decision, to provide lasting beauty
cutting directly on countertops should be avoided.
As well, hot items are better placed on trivets than
directly on counter surfaces.
