Bathroom Storage Solutions
by Joanie Veitch

Usually the smallest room in the house, the bathroom is traffic central and it can be incredibly difficult to keep organized.

Rest assured, even if you have a tiny bathroom there is a lot that can be done to keep your bathroom both stylish and organized. And it doesn’t have to involve knocking out walls to make the bathroom bigger either.

The first thing to do to get a sense of what you actually need in terms of storage is to clear out the clutter. Empty your cabinets, drawers, shelves and cupboards.

Get rid of stuff you don’t use, or has passed its expiry date. You’ll be amazed at how much junk you’ve been holding on to.

Next take a good look at what you have and what your family’s needs are.

Think about the way your family uses the space and the resulting clutter. With younger children small cubbies work wonders for helping them store their things. Hooks or hangers can also work well for keeping everyone’s toiletries organized. Baskets are a great way to store facecloths and hand towels, as well as personal items.

Here are some quick things you can do to create space easily:

Add an extra shelf in the vanity cupboard for extra supplies
Put a cabinet above the toilet
Add wall shelves in any area that won’t interrupt traffic
Use small plastic organizers or dividers to keep drawers from becoming cluttered
Mount wire caddies on the inside of cupboard doors for small items that are frequently used, such as hair accessories or cotton swabs

If you’re in the mood for some bathroom remodeling or bigger solutions, consider the following:

If you have the space, interesting furniture pieces, such as an armoire or stand-alone cabinet, adds both style and storage to the room. Make sure to have adjustable shelves for optimal organization
A wall-length countertop that includes sink and storage cabinets can be both esthetically and functionally beautiful
Recessed shelving makes great use of wall space. Add framed glass doors and you have an eye-catching storage solution.
Install a new shower door that features an integrated storage system. Sterling, a brand of Kohler Co., recently introduced an innovative sliding bath and shower door — called the Stor-ganize — that provides sturdy, modular, easy-to-clean shelves and hooks within a storage column.

Here are some quick tips for a visually cleaner look:

Replace the vanity cabinet with a pedestal sink or a wall mounted sink.
Choose a neutral or softer color for the walls. If you love bright colors by all means use them, but as accessories, not the main event.
Add light. Enlarge a small window if possible. Put in wall sconces.
When adding cabinets and shelves, try to maintain continuity by using the same materials and styles
To make the room seem larger, add a large mirror

Talk to a bathroom remodeling contractor for ideas on how to make the most efficient use of your space. They do this for a living and will see solutions you have probably never considered.

Note: The Sterling Stor-ganize bypass bath and shower door is available at The Home Depot. For more information on this product check their web site at: www.SterlingPlumbing.com/whatsnew_storganize.html
